La storia della genesi del Palazzo non è certa, ma studiando le carte storiche del centro di Firenze si può risalire fino alla “veduta Buonsignori” del 1584, nella quale è visibile l’impianto di un edificato perpendicolare alla strada, il lotto ben definito da muri perpendicolari al fiume, un orto all’interno delle mura merlate che difendevano dai possibili attacchi provenienti dall’Arno. Nella carta della città del 1690, la rappresentazione dell’edificato è meno definita ma è riconoscibile una fascia compatta lungo la strada, che fa pensare a una possibile fusione di più cellule singole per la creazione di organismi più estesi e complessi. Tutto questo è in linea con l’incremento edilizio della zona in occasione della costruzione del nuovo complesso del Cestello e del Granaio Granducale. Nel 1783 è ancora evidente un edificio in linea con una grande corte centrale e un orto verso l’Arno. Nel XVIII sec. il palazzo, in quel tempo di proprietà dei Marchesi Capponi, viene ampliato e decorato: una parte di questi interventi sono tutt’oggi visibili nell’alcova del primo piano, in cui sono presenti stucchi tra cui lo stemma nobiliare del casato e un affresco allegorico sul soffitto. In una planimetria del 1832, realizzata sui catastali dell’epoca, la pianta rappresentata è molto simile a quella attuale: sono visibili infatti le tre corti più piccole. È probabilmente questo il periodo in cui sorge il Palazzo così come lo vediamo adesso: in questo momento i complessi granducali fungono da fulcro della città, e borgo San Frediano, allora via carraia, è un’arteria principale del tessuto viario. Dopo l’annessione della Toscana al Regno d’Italia e la proclamazione di Firenze capitale, dal 1865 al 1871, si creano tutti i presupposti per l’adeguamento dell’assetto urbanistico della città; la trasformazione edilizia è radicale e riguarda l’introduzione del piano Poggi, l’ampliamento delle strade e la realizzazione di interventi puntuali sui singoli edifici, con la conseguente distruzione del tessuto edilizio medievale per far posto ad unità più uniformi con funzioni tipiche della dimensione urbana ottocentesca. L’immobile non viene sottratto all’influenza del clima di rinnovamento generale: nel 1865, il proprietario, il Cav. Wagnière, citato da una targa in marmo di notevoli dimensioni presente nell’androne d’ingresso, commissiona all’Ing. Guglielmo Galanti un intervento di ampia ristrutturazione che porta l’edificio ad assumere l’aspetto dell’attuale palazzo in stile neoclassico. L’edificio viene ampliato in seguito alla sopraelevazione di un piano e alla demolizione di un muro di separazione con il giardino. Inoltre vengono attuate consistenti modifiche nella distribuzione interna degli ambienti, anche attraverso interventi su alcune strutture portanti; i vani scala vengono spostati, nell’androne di ingresso viene realizzata una volta unghiata, le aperture al piano terra su borgo San Frediano sono ampliate. Anche i prospetti sono modificati: su borgo San Frediano viene realizzato un finto bugnato con tre portali centinati, ai piani superiori (anche nel prospetto retro) i tre ordini di finestre sono sottolineati attraverso l’ornamento con architravi e timpani e fasce marcapiano tra un piano e l’altro. Le finestre del piano primo hanno un architrave retto da due mensole, decorato con timpano o arco, mentre il secondo e il terzo piano hanno un decoro più semplice e un architrave piano. Nel 1904 il palazzo viene acquistato dal Cav. Ing. John Elliott, che contatta nuovamente l’Ing. Galanti affidandogli l’incarico di alcune modifiche finalizzate alla realizzazione di nuove aperture e tramezzi, segnate dal progettista direttamente sui disegni del 1865. Un portone in legno dà accesso a un atrio comunicante con due corti interne; sul lato destro un’ampia apertura in legno e vetro, sottolineata da un arco in pietra serena, si apre sulla scalinata, sempre in pietra serena, che distribuisce gli accessi ai tre piani sovrastanti. Gli ambienti all’interno conservano decorazioni pittoriche e stucchi sia del periodo Napoleonico che più tarde. Le aperture che danno sull’Arno hanno pregiati infissi in legno con scuri e persiane. Il giardino posteriore, accessibile anche da Lungarno Soderini, anch’esso vincolato come tutto il Palazzo, e presente negli elenchi della legge 1 giugno 1939 n 1089, presenta i parterre originali disegnati in periodo ottocentesco.
